Hugh’s Nughs KEW GARDENS The Treetop Walkway in Kew is 200 metres long and towers 18 metres above the ground. Made from over 400 tonnes of weathered steel, the rusted steel columns blend in with the natural environment. Visitors are enabled a rare insight into the complex ecosystem of the forest canopy, a world teeming with birds and insects, lichens and fungi. It may be higher and longer than the Boomslang (130 m long and rising to 12 m), but the Kirstenbosch walkway, narrow and slender, lightly snakes, winds and dips its way through the canopy, in a discreet, almost invisible way. The scenery from it can’t be beaten.

Tailpiece What is Success? To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people And the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics And endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, Or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; This is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson
