HAPPY NEW YEAR & ALL THE BEST FOR 2014 EDITORIAL
WORDS OF WISDOM Submitted by BEV BIRD
Over the years I’ve collected numerous newspaper and magazine snippets containing sayings by various famous (and sometimes not-so-famous) people, which I found funny or moving or thought-provoking. Here are some of them: I hope you enjoy them. Unfortunately I cannot credit the various sources as I no longer even remember where most of them came from. Soccer legend Diego Maradona, after having been booked into a psychiatric clinic in Buenos Aires in 2004 for treatment for drug-related problems: ‘In this clinic there’s somebody who thinks he’s Napoleon, there’s another who thinks he’s St Martin, but they don’t believe that I am Maradona.’ German ex-chancellor Herman Kohl, in June 2000, describing his lost dog: ‘As a dog, he’s a disaster. But as a human being, he’s wonderful.’ British adventurerBear Grylls, aged 23, at that time the youngest Westerner ever to summit Everest and return, upon reaching the summit on 16 May 1998: ‘Base Camp, we seem to have run out of Earth.’ Hong Kong politician, Andrew Wong, arrested for drunken driving in December 2000, upon being told by his wife to choose between drinking and driving: ‘I’ve chosen drinking. I’ve decided that in future I’ll catch taxis.’ Igor Stravinsky, referring to his friend, American poet WH Auden (Wystan Hugh Auden), who presumably must have been very wrinkled: ‘Pretty soon we’re going to have to smooth Wystan out to see who he is.’ American actor, Robert Redford: ‘I’m not a facelift person. I am what I am. It’s OK for some people, but the trade-off is that something of your soul in your face goes away. You end up looking body- snatched in the last analysis.’ Eleanor Roosevelt, USA First Lady from 1933-1945: ‘Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.’ JK Rowling, author of the ‘Harry Potter’ series of books, explaining in ‘The Times’ in
April 2010 her decision, as a single mother, to remain living in the UK and face massive tax liability, rather than escaping to a tax haven: ‘I am indebted to the British welfare state; the very one that Mr Cameron would like to replace with charity handouts. When my life hit rock bottom, that safety net -threadbare though it had become under John Major’s government - was there to break the fall. I cannot help feeling, therefore, that it would have been contemptible to rush off to the West Indies at the first sniff of a sevenfigure royalty cheque. This, if you like, is my notion of patriotism.’ South African writer Wilbur Smith, upon being asked what the one thing was that he would try to save if his house went up in flames: ‘My ass.’ Mizuta Masahide, poet and samurai (1657-1723): ‘Since my house burned down/ I now have a better view/ Of the rising moon.’ Noel Coward, English playwright and actor (1899-1973): ‘Why do I drink champagne for breakfast? Doesn’t everyone?’ Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, to her daughter Queen Elizabeth II when she had a rare glass of wine at lunch: ‘Is that wise? You know you have to reign this afternoon.’ Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain (1500-1558): ‘I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse.’ BillGates, founder of Microsoft, advising senior school pupils regarding one of life’s lessons he believes they are not taught at school: ‘Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.’ Nelson Mandela, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ 1994: ‘I was not born with a hunger to be free, I was born free - in every way that I could know … It was only when I began to learn that my boyhood freedom was an illusion, when I discovered as a young man that my freedom had already been taken from me, that I began to hunger for it.’ Hannah Senesh, poet, playwright, and paratrooper (1921-1944): ‘There are stars whose brilliance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind.’

CHRISTMAS MEETING MINUTES Three wonderful Rotary Wynberg happenings took place at our Christmas Evening on 12 December 2013 when we inducted a new member, Stephen van Niekerk, into Rotary Wynberg and Mike Schreiber was awarded a much deserved Paul Harris certificate and badge for his extensive and much appreciated services to Rotary Wynberg, the Rotary movement and the many communities and causes he and we support.
Congratulations to both PP Mike Schreiber & New Member Stephen van Niekerk. We look forward to your continued involvement and support of Rotary Wynberg. The third happening was of course the enjoyable Christmas supper and the annual present swopping. This year the present swopping followed much the same as in previous years overlaid with complexities designed and executed by PP Mike Schreiber that all but baffled us which was only really understood by Mike himself, if indeed he did understand it. Nevertheless the evening was enjoyed by all and everyone seemed to be happy with their Christmas gifts. CONGRATULATIONS:
Congratulations to the Lawrence family on the recent birth of their daughter, Jennifer Leigh Lawrence. JENNIFER LEIGH LAWRENCE

JACKPOT: Things are hotting up over weekly Jackpot Swindle draw! At our Christmas evening on Thursday 12 December 2013 Mike Schreiber in amongst his many other roles on the evening drew Graham Todd’s name from the hat who then drew the 9 of Spades, close but no cigar. Ag shame! Bev Bird received the consolation prize of R40 silver rands. The Jackpot now stands at R1555.00. PRESIDENT’S QUOTE:
You will not have a better tomorrow if you can’t forget about yesterday. HAPPY NEW YEAR TAILPIECE
You can tell a lot about a woman’s mood just by her hands! For instance, if they are holding a gun she is probably angry.
