Residents of Fish Hoek faced a harrowing experience as a wildfire threatened their homes on 28 January 2016, forcing evacuations and leaving families in fear of losing their properties. Albie Whitehouse described the chaos of the afternoon, recalling how he rushed to his home on Mountain Road to find flames dangerously close, prompting him to evacuate his four dogs, two birds, and critical documents. “It was very frightening,” he said, detailing the frantic effort to remove four cars from his property as ash blanketed the area. Neighbors echoed his distress, with one woman recounting how she abandoned her visit to her ill mother to return home, grabbing only a suitcase of belongings. Both residents expressed relief upon returning to find their homes intact, though heavily damaged by ash.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including the City of Cape Town Fire Services, Table Mountain National Parks, and Volunteer Wild Fire Services, worked through the night to contain the blaze, which had initially threatened to spread further. By Friday morning, efforts had shifted to monitoring hotspots, though the fire’s proximity to homes remained a source of anxiety.
