A 16-year-old South African schoolgirl, Clair Reed, invented a product that earned her the South African Youth Water Prize and made her the first South African to win the international Junior Water Prize. Her innovation has since inspired initiatives like Reel Gardening, which has supported schools in addressing food insecurity through sustainable vegetable gardens. Eldocrest Primary School, aided by ATKV, received a Reel Gardening garden and training in 2014, providing much-needed fresh produce to supplement its school feeding scheme. Similarly, the Ekurhuleni Farming Projects Co-Op at a Kwa-Thema school leveraged Reel Gardening training to establish a thriving garden, generating both food and income for its members. The project’s success hinges on the dedication of its participants, who have transformed challenges into opportunities for growth.
