A nation that forgets its past has no future. We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself to prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks. You don’t make the poor richer by making the rich poorer. I’d rather argue against a hundred idiots, than have one agree with me. Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions. Fear is a reaction, courage is a decision. Life is fraught with opportunities to keep your mouth shut. An appeaser is one who feeds the crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results. One man with conviction will overwhelm a hundred who only have opinions.

July in Rotary A New Year – Be the Inspiration
When you’re 20 you care what everyone thinks, when you’re 40 you stop caring what everyone thinks, when you’re 60 you realize no one was thinking about you in the first place.
Wynberg Rotary meet every Thursday, 6 for 6.30pm, Palm House, Wynberg.
Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

Many forms of government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried. Submitted by Dennis Gowdy

Swindle
Biffy’s name was, yet again, drew but she only found the 5 of club. The members did say “Ah shame” but were, not so secretly, relieved.
Nikki Botha told us of some of her adventures as a crew member of the “Sea Shepherd”.
Speaker
All on the ship are dedicated to Social Justice whilst preserving the marine environment. They normally operate within the confines of the law of the country in which they are operating. Japan is one country that is of specific interest to them as they are horrified by the slaughter of Dolphins and Whales that is undertaken by the Japanese. Nikki told us that she had become such a nuisance to them that she was arrested and only released, without charge, after21 days in solitary. She said that they had now branded her and her colleagues as terrorists. At the end of her fascinating talk she left us with the sobering thought that the ocean needs repopulating, and unless something is done immediately, its usefulness as a source of food for the world’s population will terminate.
